What Jonathan decided

Summit Springs RAW = winner (round three); Function = 2nd; Nestle = 3rd; Nice = 4th; Giant Eagle = 5th

Function Drinking Water

It came in second place in a five-water showdown, which is respectable. Summit Springs RAW just had that day.

About Function Drinking Water

Function is a functional beverage brand from Santa Monica's MD Drinks, launched back in 2005 with their Urban Detox drink, followed by a line of problem-targeted drinks and a plain still water (vapor-distilled with electrolytes). Sunsweet Growers bought the company in 2011. They are known for cheeky marketing and colorful bottles.

Giant Eagle Purified

This one had a great run in #3669. The taste was a tie with Sam's Choice, but Giant Eagle won me over with its double-your-money-back guarantee and Sam's Choice's past quality issues. It later came in last in a five-water round won by Summit Springs RAW, so the magic did not last forever.

About Giant Eagle Purified

Giant Eagle's house-brand purified water is bottled at their own facility, Chestnut Ridge Beverage Co. in Latrobe, PA, a former LeNature's plant they bought out of bankruptcy in 2007 for about $23 million. They spent around $4 million getting it running again, and it produces the chain's waters, teas, and carbonated drinks.

Nestle Pure Life

Nestle beat Market Pantry in #3787, but the taste was a tie: it won on packaging, those six bottle designs with positive messages. Then in #3935 it finished third behind Summit Springs RAW and Function. A packaging win and a bronze.

About Nestle Pure Life

Nestle Pure Life launched in Pakistan in 1998 and is now sold in 21 countries. The US water is purified through a 12-step process with minerals added back for taste. In April 2021 Nestle sold its North American water business, so the brand is now run by BlueTriton Brands (part of Primo Brands) under license.

Nice! Purified

The purified water beat the spring water in #3786: "the purified Municipal Water is the better one," while the spring had a slight chalky taste. Then in #3935 it finished fourth behind Summit Springs RAW, Function, and Nestle. One win, one fourth.

About Nice! Purified

Nice! is Walgreens' private-label grocery brand, launched nationally in 2011. The purified water comes in 24-packs of 16.9 oz bottles for about $4.19, sold only at Walgreens. The line's tagline is "Simple. Honest. For You," and its packaging redesign won a 2019 Nielsen Design Impact Award.

Summit Springs Raw Water (Summit Spring)

This was one of his all-time favorites. He rated it 9.9 out of 10, gave it two thumbs up, and it marched through round after round before Starkey finally stopped it in round five.

About Summit Springs Raw Water (Summit Spring)

Summit Spring comes from a free-flowing surface spring on Summit Hill in Harrison, Maine, one of the oldest known springs in North America. In 2009 it launched RAW WATER, the first spring water bottled straight from the source with no filtration, no treatment, no pumps, no boreholes, after Maine granted an unprecedented waiver. The president only draws the 38 gallons per minute that naturally surface. About five bucks a bottle, and he once got twelve bottles from the president himself.
