What Jonathan decided
Brita-filtered tap water = winner ("the winner is the Britta... Brita is moving on to the next round"); Circle K = runner-up ("it's kind of close between these two"); Carnival = eliminated (plasticky taste); Food Club = worst, thumbs down ("like dirty like an animal peed into it"); Hello Water = eliminated (10 calories, "not really a [water]")
Brita Filter
The Brita pitcher was the star of its own little tournament. It won the speed test, it won the taste test over PUR and plain tap (which had a strong chlorine flavor), and in a bigger bracket it took down four more waters to move on. Food Club was the day's disaster, which he described in language we will not repeat here.
About Brita Filter
This is the same Brita brand as above, the German filtration giant named after founder Heinz Hankammer's daughter. The home pitchers and dispensers are the filtered-tap-water alternative his series kept drinking from, with standard filters rated for about 40 gallons or two months.
Carnival Purified
Carnival won its first matchup against the Margaritaville Caribbean Rhythm, which Jonathan hit with a strong plasticky note. But in the bigger bracket, the Brita-filtered tap water was the clear winner, Circle K ran a close second, and Carnival was eliminated for that same plasticky taste.
About Carnival Purified
This is Carnival Cruise Line's house-brand bottled water, purified water bottled by Niagara Bottling. Guests cannot bring their own bottled water aboard, so it is effectively the default bottled option for most cruisers, sold pre-cruise in 12-packs through the Fun Shops.
Circle K Purified
Jonathan loved the underdog story here. The cheap standard Circle K bottle beat the overpriced Momentum version with the thicker bottle, because the cheaper one simply tasted better. In the next round it came in a close second to Brita, which is nothing to be ashamed of.
About Circle K Purified
This is the private-label purified water of the Circle K convenience-store chain, owned by the Canadian multinational Alimentation Couche-Tard. It is reverse-osmosis purified water positioned as the cheapest option in the store, a value play against the national brands.
Food Club Spring
Food Club's big moment came against the flavored sparkling, when Jonathan said the still water was simply more of a real water. But the very next round was a disaster: it finished dead last behind Brita, Circle K, Carnival, and Hello Water, earning a thumbs down with a description we will leave out of a family article.
About Food Club Spring
Food Club is the store-brand spring water of Food Club, the private label of Topco Associates, Inc., a cooperative wholesaler supplying independent grocery retailers. Topco is based in Illinois and is one of the largest US food cooperatives, so the bottler varies by region.
Hello Water (hellowater)
It got eliminated with 10 calories, and my verdict was that it was "not really a water." Brita-filtered tap water won that whole round, which tells you how the day went.
About Hello Water (hellowater)
Hello Water is a fiber-infused flavored water from Chicago-based Hello Beverages, founded by beverage industry veterans Rusty Jones and Tom Bushkie. Each 16 oz bottle has 5 grams of soluble fiber, zero sugar, and about 10 calories, sweetened with stevia and erythritol. The flavors are named after emotions instead of fruits, like Smile and Love.
