Featured waters

Cascade Mountain Spring, Echo Purified Alkaline, Essence Purified Water (Essence pH10), Fruit Fiz Black Cherry, Lurisia Natural Spring.

Winner: Lurisia Natural Spring.

What Jonathan decided

Lurisia Natural Spring Water = winner ("tastes the best out of these five"); Cascade Mountain Spring Water = close but not winner; Echo purified alkaline = middle; Fruit Fiz Black Cherry = lower; Essence Purified Water (pH 10) = last ("flowery taste"). All five get thumbs up.

Cascade Mountain Spring

Cascade opened strong, beating the sparkling Badoit outright. In the five-way round it was a tight race, and Jonathan said Cascade was close, but Lurisia simply tasted the best of the five. Echo landed in the middle, Fruit Fiz lower, and the Essence pH10 finished last with a flowery taste. All five still got thumbs up.

About Cascade Mountain Spring

Cascade Mountain Spring is sourced from a pristine spring in Butte Falls, Oregon, in the Cascade Range, naturally filtered through volcanic rock at about pH 7.7. It was founded by Bill and Delora Risser, residents of the tiny timber town, as a family business, and it is bottled in eco-friendly glass as a plastic alternative.

Echo Purified Alkaline

Echo opened with a win, with Jonathan congratulating it and sending it on while Sunnyside Farms went home for tasting worse. In the five-way round it landed in the middle while Lurisia took the top spot.

About Echo Purified Alkaline

Research could not find a well-documented bottled water brand called Echo Purified Alkaline. The closest match is ECHO, a company that sells hydrogen water machines and bottles, which is an equipment brand rather than a bottled alkaline water. It may have been a small regional label that left little trace online.

Essence Purified Water (Essence pH10)

The flowery taste did this one in. It landed at the bottom of the five-way ranking, while Lurisia took the win for tasting the best of the bunch. All five still got thumbs up, so it was a gentle last place.

About Essence Purified Water (Essence pH10)

Same Essence brand as above: the niche "essence pH10" alkaline water with added minerals and organic hibiscus hints, sold in 1-liter bottles through natural and online retailers.

Fruit Fiz Black Cherry

It landed on the lower end of a five-water lineup, but honestly all five got thumbs up from me that day. Lurisia just tasted the best of the bunch. Black cherry is a tough flavor to get right.

About Fruit Fiz Black Cherry

Fruit Fiz is the sparkling beverage line of Sunny Select, the private brand of Save Mart Companies, the West Coast grocery operator behind Save Mart, Lucky, and FoodMaxx. The black cherry is zero-calorie and sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium, in the same style as Clear American.

Lurisia Natural Spring

Two wins for this one. It beat World Market's sparkling mineral water ("the winner between these two is this one however you pronounce it"), then won a five-water field outright because it tasted the best. All five got thumbs up, but Lurisia was the clear pick.

About Lurisia Natural Spring

Same Lurisia: premium Italian water from Acque Minerali, founded 1940 in Piedmont, sourced at 1,400 to 1,460 meters on Mount Pigna. Sold as Stille (still) and Bolle (sparkling) in PET and glass, ultra-low sodium around 2.6 mg/L, balanced pH near 6.7. Coca-Cola HBC and Coca-Cola bought it in a 2019 joint venture for about 88 million euros, and it has been a Slow Food partner since 2008.
