What Jonathan decided
Crystal 2O = winner (taste tie, value tiebreak; to round 3); Just The Basics runner-up; Mountain Valley #3; Tyler Mountain out; S. Pellegrino out
Crystal 2o
When the taste is a tie, the price tag decides it. Jonathan called the taste a wash and gave the win to Crystal 2O on value, sending it on to round three.
About Crystal 2o
Crystal 2O is an obscure budget bottled-water brand sold in purified and spring variants at discount retailers. There is very little public information about the company or its water source beyond nutrition listings showing zero calories and zero sodium.
Just The Basics
Crystal 2O won on a taste tie and value tiebreak and went to round 3, with Just The Basics as runner-up. Mountain Valley was third, and the Pellegrino went out.
About Just The Basics
Just The Basics is CVS Pharmacy's budget store brand, alongside CVS Health and Gold Emblem. The purified water is sold in gallon jugs for about $2.39, a no-frills essentials line at CVS stores across the US. I also reviewed it in #3558, where it lost to Iceland Natural Spring.
Mountain Valley Spring
The spring version beat its own sparkling sibling in #4831 and moved on. Then in #4832 it finished third behind Crystal 2O and Just The Basics. A win and a bronze, not bad for a 150-year-old.
About Mountain Valley Spring
Mountain Valley is one of America's oldest water brands, bottled in Hot Springs, Arkansas since 1871, founded by pharmacist Peter Greene and incorporated in 1883. It established one of America's first business franchises in 1894 and went coast-to-coast by 1920. It is now owned by Primo Water, and its glass bottles won "best of show" from the International Bottled Water Association in 2006.
S.Pellegrino (San Pellegrino)
In a five-water round, Crystal 2O won on a value tiebreak and Pellegrino went out early.
About S.Pellegrino (San Pellegrino)
S.Pellegrino is the famous sparkling mineral water from San Pellegrino Terme at the foot of the Italian Alps, bottled since 1899 and owned by Nestle since 1997. It is known for fine, gentle carbonation and food pairing.
Tyler Mountain Water
It went out in the four-way. Crystal 2O won on a taste tie broken by value.
About Tyler Mountain Water
Tyler Mountain is a western Pennsylvania regional bottler, Aqua Filter Fresh in Pittsburgh, established 1930 and family-run by the Hupe family. They make spring, purified, drinking, and distilled water, and do home and office delivery. Jonathan lives in Pittsburgh, so this one was almost local.
