Winner: Ice Mountain.
What Jonathan decided
Ice Mountain wins ("Ice Mountain is moving on to the next round congratulations Ice Mountain"); Poland Spring eliminated over Wikipedia's 2003 false-advertising lawsuit info; Deer Park eliminated because the name reminds him of "a deer peeing into the water." All three taste identical: verdict decided on non-taste factors.
Deer Park Spring Water
This is one of the great Jonathan rulings. All three waters tasted exactly the same, so he judged them on everything else. Poland Spring went out over a false-advertising lawsuit he had read about, and Deer Park went out because the name made him picture a deer peeing into the water. Ice Mountain moved on.
About Deer Park Spring Water
Deer Park is a Mid-Atlantic regional spring water with origins in the 1873 B and O Railroad "Boiling Spring" in Deer Park, Maryland, a site visited by presidents from Garfield to Taft. It is now part of Primo Brands after Nestle Waters North America was sold to private equity in 2021 and later merged with Primo Water. The 1980s catchphrase was "Deer PARK, that's good water!"
Ice Mountain
In #3781 all three tasted identical, so the verdict came down to non-taste factors: Poland Spring was out over a 2003 false-advertising lawsuit, and Deer Park was out because the name reminded me of "a deer peeing into the water." Ice Mountain moved on by being the least objectionable. It later finished third in a five-water round won by Aqua Pacific.
About Ice Mountain
Ice Mountain is a natural spring water brand sold in the US Midwest, bottled in Michigan. It was formerly part of Nestle Waters North America, then sold in 2021 to One Rock Capital Partners and Metropoulos & Co., becoming part of BlueTriton Brands alongside Poland Spring, Arrowhead, Deer Park, Ozarka, and Zephyrhills. The Michigan bottling drew attention for Nestle paying very low extraction fees while generating large sales.
Poland Spring
Ice Mountain won #3781, and here is the kicker: all three waters tasted identical. Poland Spring got eliminated over the 2003 false-advertising lawsuit, and Deer Park got eliminated because the name reminds me of a deer peeing into the water. Verdict decided on non-taste factors. That is a first.
About Poland Spring
Poland Spring is natural spring water from Maine, a brand dating to 1845 and one of America's oldest. It was a Nestle Waters North America brand until Nestle sold its North American waters for $4.3 billion in 2021; it is now under BlueTriton Brands (merged with Primo Water in 2024 to become Primo Brands). Controversies include a 2003 class-action false-advertising suit over its "spring water" claims (settled for $10 million without admitting fault) and a 2017 suit alleging "not one drop" meets the FDA spring-water definition.
