I like spending time with people. I hate doing stuff with people.
Those sound like opposites, but they are not. Let me explain.
I love people. Give me a couch, a friend, and nowhere to be, and I am the happiest person alive. We can talk about nothing for three hours and I will remember it fondly for years.
But the second someone says "we should DO something," a small part of me dies. Do what? Go where? It involves pants? Plans? Parking?
Here is what I have figured out: I do not dislike activities. I dislike everything around the activities. The scheduling, the driving, the waiting in line, the part where you spend forty dollars to stand near a thing. The activity is never the problem. The logistics are the problem.
People are the point. Everything else is overhead.
So if you invite me somewhere and I say no, know that it is not you. It is the parking. I would love to see you. Just come over and sit on my couch. We will have a great time doing absolutely nothing, together.
